Inauguration of the ENHANCE Winter School in Data Literacy

On 6 February 2023, the inauguration of the  ENHANCE Winter School in Data Literacy took place at the Main Building of the Warsaw University of Technology. The event is organised by Warsaw University of Technology as part of the Erasmus+ (Blended Intensive Programme) in cooperation with Technische Universität Berlin, Universitat Politècnica de València and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. NAWA funding made it possible for students from Ukraine to participate in the winter school.

The opening ceremony was conducted by Prof. Jan Słyk, WUT Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, who opened the winter school and welcomed the students, Katarzyna Aleksy, Director of Programmes for Institutions at the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, Prof. Wojciech Domitrz, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences, and Grzegorz Robak, Director of the Centre for International Cooperation. The introductory lecture "From Data to Knowledge - a winding path with highs and lows" was delivered by prof. Jarosław Arabas, Director of the Institute of Computer Science at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology.

After the inauguration, the students moved to the classrooms of the Warsaw Design Factory at the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology, and in the afternoon went on a study visit to CEZAMATwhere they were warmly welcomed by Aleksandra Mościcka-Studzińska, Deputy Director of CEZAMAT, and Professor Romuald Beck, Attorney for strategic projects at CEZAMAT.

The ENHANCE Winter School in Data Literacy is divided into two parts: on-site (from 6 to 10 February) and online (from 13 February to 10 March). During the week-long lectures and workshops at the Warsaw University of Technology, students will gain knowledge and skills related to databases, and will also have the opportunity to learn the basics of the Python programming language, with a focus on the tools most useful in data analysis. Then, teams of students (3-4 persons) will start working on a project task, which they will continue online under the guidance of lecturers from Warsaw University of Technology (Anna Cena PhD, Anna Wróblewska PhD), Technische Universität Berlin (Prof. Timm Teubner) and Universitat Politècnica de València  (Prof. José V. Benlloch-Dualde, Prof Felix Buendía-García).

The on-site part of the winter school was prepared by Anna Cena PhD and Anna Wróblewska PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences at the Warsaw University of Technology. They are supported by from WUT doctoral candidates: Anastasiya Danilenka, Muhammad Farhan Safdar and Soveatin Kuntur. A lecture with moderated discussion on the legal conditions of data collection and processing will be delivered by Dominik Sypniewski PhD from the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences.

The winter school is attended by 24 students from 9 universities and 6 countries, including 7 universities of the ENHANCE Alliance and 2 Ukrainian universities as ENHANCE Network Partners: Kyiv Polytechnic University and Lviv Polytechnic University. Students who complete the winter school will receive a certificate of participation in the ENHANCE Winter School in Data Literacy equivalent to 4 ECTS credits.
