Participation of academic teachers from Ukraine in language courses at WUT under NAWA program “Solidarity with Ukraine”

From September 9 to 13, 2024, the Warsaw University of Technology organised Polish language and English language courses academic teachers from Ukraine, financed by the 'NAWA Ukraine 2 - European Universities' project. The Polish language course was taught by Natalia Nowak-Psiuk, MA (Foreign Language Centre, WUT), and the English language course was taught by Ewelina Janas, MA (Foreign Language Centre, WUT). The courses were coordinated by Lucyna Skwarko, MA, FLC Director  and Dorota Chromińska, MA, FLC Director's Proxy  for Cooperation with ENHANCE and Center for International Cooperation .

The Polish language course (B2 level) was attended by 11 lecturers and researchers  from Lviv Polytechnic National University, and the English language course (B2 level) by 12 lecturers and researchers from Lviv Polytechnic National University and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Both courses were aimed at improving language skills for academic purposes and presentation skills, public speaking, developing effective communication strategies needed for academic discussions, developing critical thinking and argumentation skills, and improving communication skills at academic conferences.

The course programme covered topics such as sustainable development, analysis of the language used in discussions on the sustainability topic, statistics such as interpreting and analyzing data and trends, and describing charts and graphs. In addition, the course  participants learned the principles of effective communication and presentation skills  as well as critical thinking. During the courses, the participants prepared and later discussed their own presentations (in pairs/groups) related to their  fields with reference to the Sustainable Development Goals. The courses emphasized speaking skills and required active participation in discussions, debates and presentations.

In addition to the classroom activities, the course participants had the opportunity to go out together, i.e. participate in a boat cruise on the Vistula River. It was a great opportunity to visit Warsaw while practicing communication skills in Polish and English. All participants received the course completion certificates and returned to Lviv and Kyiv with new knowledge, wonderful memories and plans for the future.
