The BioLAB programme is a one-year internship for students in the biological, chemical, biophysical, medical and related sciences (biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, pharmacy, medicine, etc.) at four US research institutions: University of Virginia, University of Chicago, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The programme was initiated by Prof. Zygmunt Derewenda of the University of Virginia. Prof Derewenda first invited students from his alma mater, the University of Lodz, to complete an internship in the USA in 2001.

Of the nearly 500 graduates and alumni of the BioLAB Programme to date, more than 90% have chosen to continue their studies in doctoral programmes, in the USA (20%), Europe and worldwide. Institutions where graduates and postgraduates of the programme study include the University of Oxford, University College London, University of Cambridge, Max Planck Institute or ETH Zürich. The results of research conducted during the internship often become the basis for articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals such as Nature, Proteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics or Acta Crystallographica.

The Polish-American Fulbright Commission has administered the Programme since 2013.

BioLAB is fully funded by the host institutions.
